Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to understand, use, and manage emotions positively to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict. Strengthening EQ in the family has so many benefits & this article will give tips to begin practicing & teaching EQ at home.

Many professionals consider emotional intelligence (EQ) as one of the most critical factors for future job success. Most jobs require us to work with others, understand other viewpoints, have self-awareness when it comes to our performance strengths & weakness, self-regulation to control our reactions in difficult situations or when working with difficult people, & the ability to make informed decisions, accept, & learn from the outcomes of our choices. These skills begin to develop in early childhood and fully develop in our early 20s. As an occupational therapist, I consciously work in EQ skill-building activities with the children I work with and my children through everyday experiences. How can we, as parents, support our children in developing EQ?

Tips for facilitating emotional intelligence within the family.

  • Listen & acknowledge each other's feelings
  • Practice self-awareness through journaling
  • Play games together
  • Give hugs
  • Own your mistakes & learn from them (openly)
  • Talk about what you do that makes you happy
  • When possible, have your child take part in making decisions for the family, i.e., what to make for dinner, how to celebrate a family member's birthday, etc.
