Creating New Habits in the New Year

With the new year comes new aspirations to make those changes you have been thinking about over the past year. What can we do to make these changes stick and adopt new, healthier habits for our children and us? Making changes in our lives and having them stick takes more than just a thought. It requires us to change our beliefs, thoughts, actions, & habits. As Mahatma Gandhi says:

Your beliefs become your thoughts,

Your thoughts become your words,

Your words become your actions,

Your actions become your habits,

Your habits become your values,

Your values become your destiny.

A few key takeaways we shared during our meetup are:

  • Changing habits often requires planning, support, knowledge of new ways to do..., new beliefs, self-compassion, & self-awareness.

  • Barriers to changing habits often include lack of motivation (the reason for changing is not strong enough), beliefs about ourselves and others that do not change to reflect the new version/habits we want to adopt, lack of support or belief from others to help us when needed, and no external support system(people, tools, tracking, systems, plans).

  • Tools & tips for creating new habits include tracking your progress, celebrating the small steps made to reach your goal (new habit), learning more about the dynamics of changing behaviors (see the video below), and changing your routine to fit in your new habits.
